ESP Goes to Washington
Today was a day to remember for EquallySharedParenting.com - we were featured in the Washington Post's On Balance blog! On Balance is hosted by Leslie Morgan Steiner, author of the book Mommy Wars; it is probably the most widely read daily column on work/life balance for parents. So, a big thank you to Leslie and to all her readers for welcoming us and sharing excellent comments, questions and ideas. If you'd like to read our post and the ensuing commentary, check out the entry from 2/20/07. We look forward to more comments from On Balance readers here at EquallySharedParenting.com - welcome!

Hi - I just found your site after learning about it in the "On Balance" blog of the Washington Post.

Your quest is good. So many have tried before you! I have (somewhere) the very first issue of Ms magazine (1970, I found it on ebay), in which a couple wrote an article about sharing housework/lifework/childcare. They had a detailed plan! I wonder if it worked out for them.

Carry on.

Correction: The premier issue of Ms - was in 1972, not 1970. Still, 35 YEARS AGO this topic got started. Looking back, there has been LOTS of improvement for women AND men! Build on it.

I hope your group in DC helps spread the word about presumptive joint custody in the event of a divorce>

Does ESP have a position on this issue? Women's groups and feminist groups have been hypocritically pushing legislation that prevents children from divorced families from having fathers in their lives, and increases the burden for single mothers.

To first anonymous poster: Thanks for sharing that fascinating fact. We are hopeful that the social climate is much more favorable today for equal sharing than it was 35 years ago, and that a great idea will finally gain foothold. It takes a long time to change the world!

To second anonymous poster: Equal custody issues are beyond the focus of this website, but deeply important to those they involve. We believe that the more parents equally share the childraising and breadwinning in intact families, the more equal sharing will be possible in divorced families as well. Beyond this generality, we need to learn far more before we can comment on this topic. -Marc
